The Poor in Spirit

Scripture: “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 5:3 (KJV)

Message

When Jesus spoke these words during the Sermon on the Mount, He introduced a powerful truth: spiritual strength begins with humility.

To be “poor in spirit” does not mean to be weak, insecure, or lacking confidence. It means recognizing your dependence on God. It is the posture of a heart that says, “Lord, without You, I can do nothing.”

Spiritual pride resists growth. But humility attracts grace.

The poor in spirit are:

  • Teachable
  • Sensitive to correction
  • Quick to seek God’s help
  • Grateful rather than entitled

When you acknowledge your need for God, you position yourself for His supply. The kingdom of heaven belongs to those who rely on Him, not those who rely solely on themselves.

True greatness in God’s kingdom begins with surrender. When you empty yourself of pride, He fills you with strength. When you lay down self-sufficiency, He lifts you with divine sufficiency.

Humility is not thinking less of yourself — it is thinking of yourself correctly, in light of God’s greatness.

Confession

I walk in humility and dependence on God.
My heart is teachable and receptive to His leading.
Grace rests upon my life because I rely on Him daily.
The kingdom of heaven is at work within me, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Prayer

Father, keep my heart humble and sensitive to You. Remove pride and self-reliance, and help me depend fully on Your wisdom and strength. Let Your grace continually rest upon my life, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
